Threading the Scriptures©

One of the unique, defining and powerful features of Golden Apples curriculum is the Threading the Scriptures© technique. This is a very important element of the Golden Apples program and is meant to be administered each week even though our weekly activity plan will not call for it. Threading the Scriptures© means that the Torah scripture verses, the words of Yeshua and the New Covenant books of scripture are intimately connected. Students will “thread” or link together a verse from the weekly Torah portion, a word from Yeshua, and a word to live by, (an instructional word from the Bible which directs our learners in the way they should live). The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to our children each and every week that, Yeshua, taught Torah! Everything that Messiah spoke is in direct line with the Old Testament and the Law of Moses.

You may wish to buy Bibles for each of your learners that are kept in the classroom and not taken home for this weekly exercise. Golden Apples references and therefore recommends The Complete Jewish Bible translation by David H. Stern. This comes in a large print version that makes an excellent demonstration tool for the classroom. If this is not an option for your congregation, you may want to create bible book covers which say, “My Golden Apples Bible” for each learner so that they know to bring the SAME Bible to services each week.

So how is this technique administered? Below is a step-by-step instructional of how to make Threading the Scriptures© work for your classroom.

1.     Have students take out their Bibles and look up the first verse mentioned in their Golden Apples Bulletin. It is located in the apple outline on the middle right hand side on the first page. Threading scriptures are also listed at the beginning of each lesson in the Teacher’s Booklet. For example the verse may be Leviticus 2:13.

2.     Ask learners to highlight or underline the verse in their Bible.

3.     In the margins of their Bible next to Leviticus 2:13 verse, instruct the students to write the words “go to verse Mark 9:50” in their Bibles. This “threads” the Lev 2:13 verse to the second Golden Apples verse outlined in the bulletin, Mark 9:50.

4.     Next ask students to look up the second verse, Mark 9:50. Ask them to highlight/underline Mark 9:50 as well. This verse outlines the words of Yeshua. At this point in the lesson it is important to be sure that students make the connection between the meanings of the two verses.

5.     Then in the margins next to Mark 9:50 have them write “go to Colossians 4:5 & 6.”

6.     Ask students to look up & highlight the final verse (Colossians 4:5 & 6), the life application verse. As they do, ask your learners what the verse means to them and how they can apply it to their individual lives.

Threading the Scriptures© can be used at any time during the lesson…whenever you feel it is appropriate. You may want to use it initially as an introductory exercise, as part of your teaching or at the end of the lesson as a wrap up. After a few weeks, you may even see that your learners “jump ahead” and thread the scriptures from their Golden Apples bulletin on their own. Whatever the case, this has proven to be a vital part of our Messianic children’s curriculum.
